What this means

Official Army Chapter 10c PDF lists minimum GM 88; OPAT, training, clearance and other requirements remain separate.

The score listed above is the minimum line score threshold from the official Army MOS specification. Meeting this threshold does not guarantee enlistment — additional requirements such as OPAT physical testing, security clearance, medical screening, and training availability are evaluated separately by your recruiter. To see how GM 88 compares with the rest of the Army, read what counts as a good ASVAB score.

Which ASVAB subtests count toward 12W

12W is judged on one line score. The subtests listed below are the Army's nominal definition of each aptitude area from DA PAM 611-21, Military Occupational Classification and Structure, Table 10-1 (ASVAB aptitude area composites). The score actually printed on your report is computed on the 1997 scale as a weighted sum of seven standard scores (DMDC 2004, Table 2.7) and may give weight to subtests outside the nominal list; GT is the exception and equals AR + VE exactly. Use the line score on your report, or compute it from your standard scores.

If your score is below GM ≥ 88

Your ASVAB report lists every line score, so start by finding GM and noting the exact gap. A small gap in one composite is usually closed by improving the subtests that feed it, and each subtest counts toward several line scores at once.

Frequently asked questions

What ASVAB score do I need for 12W Carpentry and Masonry Specialist?

The verified score threshold recorded for this MOS is GM ≥ 88. Other requirements such as OPAT, clearance, and training are separate.

Which ASVAB subtests count toward the GM score for 12W?

GM (General Maintenance) is nominally GS + AS + MK + EI. The reported score is a weighted sum of seven standard scores on the 1997 scale, so subtests outside that list can also count. Compare the line score printed on your ASVAB report against GM ≥ 88, or compute it from your standard scores with the calculator.

Is AFQT enough to qualify for 12W?

No. AFQT is used for general enlistment qualification. 12W uses specific Army line scores (GM ≥ 88), and the line-score rule shown here is the verified threshold. These are composite scores calculated from ASVAB subtests and are different from your AFQT percentile.

Are there Engineers jobs with a lower ASVAB threshold than 12W?

Yes. Among the 9 currently verified CMF 12 entries on this site, 3 list a lower entry threshold than 12W and 5 list a higher one. The ranked table on this page shows each requirement; a lower threshold in a different line score is not directly comparable to GM ≥ 88.

Where does this 12W score requirement come from?

The verified threshold is recorded from the official Army MOS specification document. Initial award, Chapter 10c; score requirement verified in official Army PDF. Source checked on 2026-09-12.
