ASVAB score chart: AFQT conversion table, categories and Army line score ranges
An ASVAB report carries three different scales, and most "score chart" questions come from mixing them up. This page lays each one out: the official table that turns your subtest scores into an AFQT percentile, the six categories the Department of Defense groups those percentiles into, and the range every Army line score must reach for a job. Every number is transcribed from the Department of Defense document that defines the 1997 score scale or derived from the verified job data on this site.
AFQT categories at a glance
AFQT percentiles run from 1 to 99. The bands below are the Department of Defense test score categories; the lowest published diploma-holder enlistment minimum sits at 31 and the alternative-credential floor at 47.
| Category | AFQT percentile | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Category I | 93–99 | Top tier — qualifies for enlistment in all branches. |
| Category II | 65–92 | Above average — qualifies for enlistment in all branches. |
| Category IIIA | 50–64 | Average — qualifies for enlistment in all branches. |
| Category IIIB | 31–49 | Below average — may qualify, but some branches and jobs have higher minimums. |
| Category IV | 10–30 | Generally not eligible for enlistment. Waivers are rare and branch-dependent. |
| Category V | 1–9 | Ineligible for military enlistment by federal law (10 U.S.C. § 520). |
Each branch's exact enlistment minimum, with its official source and credential tier, is on the minimum ASVAB score by branch page; the share of recent recruits in each category is on the average ASVAB score page.
AFQT conversion chart: AFQTS to percentile
AFQT is not read off a single subtest. Your report's AR, MK and VE standard scores are combined as AFQTS = AR + MK + 2 × VE, and that sum (AFQTS) is looked up in the table below, Table 2.5, ‘97 AFQT Percentile Conversion of Development and Evaluation of the 1997 ASVAB Score Scale (Segall, July 2004). Sums of 109 or less are percentile 1; 269 or more are percentile 99.

The three scales on one report
| Score | Scale | Used for | How it is produced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subtest standard scores | Mean 50, standard deviation 10; whole numbers, usually 20–80 | Inputs to everything else | Item response theory scoring on the 1997 reference population; VE is derived from WK and PC together |
| AFQT | Percentile 1–99 | Enlistment eligibility; each branch sets a minimum | AFQTS = AR + MK + 2 × VE, looked up in the table above |
| Army line scores | Mean 100, standard deviation 20 | Job (MOS) qualification | GT = Rnd(1.074292 × (AR + VE) − 7.443781); the other nine are weighted sums of seven standard scores (Table 2.7) |
None of the three converts into another. A percentile cannot be turned into a line score, and a practice test's count of correct answers is not on any of these scales. The GT score page walks through the one composite you can compute by hand; the Army score guide covers all ten.

Frequently asked questions
How do I read an ASVAB score chart?
Find which score you are holding first. Subtest standard scores are on a mean-50 scale, AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99, and Army line scores are on a mean-100 scale. The AFQT table on this page maps the sum AR + MK + 2 × VE to a percentile; the category band shows where that percentile falls for enlistment purposes; the line score table shows the range each Army composite must reach for a job.
What AFQT score is 50 percent?
An AFQT of 50 means you scored at or above 50 percent of the 1997 reference population, not that you answered half the questions. On the conversion table it first appears at an AFQTS of 202 (AR + MK + 2 × VE), the start of Category IIIA.
What AFQTS do I need for an AFQT of 31?
The lowest published diploma-holder minimum across the branches is 31, which the table reaches at an AFQTS of 183. GED and other alternative credentials need at least 47 (AFQTS 199) in every branch that publishes a figure. Each branch's exact minimum and source is on the minimum ASVAB score page.
Is the ASVAB score chart the same for every branch?
The AFQT conversion and the category bands are Department of Defense standards shared by every branch. What differs is the minimum each branch accepts and the composites each branch builds for jobs: the Army line scores on this page do not apply to Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard classification, which use different composites and scales.
Where does this chart come from?
The AFQT conversion is Table 2.5, ‘97 AFQT Percentile Conversion of Development and Evaluation of the 1997 ASVAB Score Scale (Segall, July 2004), published by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC). This site keeps a checksummed copy and extracted the table by script from lines 844–929 of the text; it was last checked on 2026-09-17. The line score ranges are derived from the 119 verified Army MOS on this site.
